Frequently Asked Questions
What is XR?
XR, or extended reality, is an umbrella term for forms of immersive technologies, such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. These technologies are collectively referred to as XR because they extend the user's reality in various ways, from fully immersing them in virtual worlds to enhancing their perception of the real world with digital elements.
Do I need any prior XR experience?
No! This hackathon is meant for everybody.
How can I prepare?
The Alternate Reality Initiative will be hosting workshops on XR development across September and October. If you are near Ann Arbor, you can join us in the Duderstadt Center, either in the VisLab (first floor) or room 3358. Alternatively, please email altrealityinitiative@gmail.com for a recording of the workshop you’re looking for, or an invitation to join in virtually.
Is there a team size limit?
Yes– teams can be composed of up to 4 people.
Where can I find a team?
The Alternate Reality Initiative is hosting a team formation and idea pitch session in-person from 4-8 pm October 11th. We’ll also be running a quick Unity Workshop, for anyone who wants a recap of the basics of XR development. Feel free to come by if you have an idea you’re excited about, or want inspiration for a new project!
Feel free to introduce yourself on our Discord, too– we’ll have a text channel meant for idea planning!
Can we use this hackathon to work on a project we have already started?
No, you cannot use a project you have already started for this hackathon. To be eligible for prizes and full support, all work must begin during the event.
What technology should I bring?
The one major piece of technology our hackathon is not providing are laptops. Having access to a PC is heavily recommended. Beyond that, every team will be provided with a VR headset if needed, and we will have more specialized technology available.
